Lineage
Paying respect to the source, where knowledge and wisdom was shared from, is very important in the Hawaiian tradition.
Lomilomi traditionally was only passed down for generations within families. That explains why the source of knowledge always was connected with the piko (navel) and roots of the ancestors.
If you introduce yourself in the Hawaiian tradition it is usual to refer to the ancestral line and to tell from whom your coming from (lineage of ancestors).
That is also the case with the knowledge which has been shared from the specific Kumu to his Haumāna (lineage). It is a reference to pay gratitude and respect.
It is only by the Kumu's decision to give the blessing to his Haumāna when the time is pono (right) to allow the start of teaching of the knowledge which has been handed down.
